WHEN RADICAL MEETS CONSERVATIVE: GODARD, DELANNOY AND THE VIRGIN MARY

Through an analysis of two filmic biographies of the Virgin Mary by diverse members of the French cinematic canon, the intersections between film and Marian symbolism are explored. Radical and conservative approaches to the Marian image are investigated in Jean-Luc Godard's Je vous salue, Marie and Jean Delannoy's Mane de Nazareth in order to examine how the Virgin Mary has come to act as a litmus test for innovation and reaction in both theology and culture
