Rapture Fictions and the Changing Evangelical Condition
School of English, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin 2, Ireland gribben@omnia.co.uk
Despite its a-cultural claims, evangelicalism, as a movement, has been profoundly shaped by its changing cultural environments. The differences that now exist between American and British evangelicalisms have been illustrated in a recent series of apocalyptic novels. These novels share a common set of tropes with other rapture novels, but their negotiation with the demands of genre and dispensational theology illustrate the significance of the changing evangelical condition.
